01. Parts of Speech

Learn how words work in a sentence and how each word has a special job.

What are Parts of Speech?

Parts of Speech are groups of words classified according to the work they do in a sentence.

In simple words, every word in a sentence has a job. Some words name people or things, some show actions, some describe, and some connect ideas.

Think of a sentence like a team

Each word has a different role, just like each member of a team has a different job.

Noun

A noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.

Examples: Riya, school, dog, book, honesty
Sentence: Riya reads a book.

Pronoun

A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.

Examples: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
Sentence: Riya is a student. She is kind.

Verb

A verb shows an action, an event, or a state of being.

Examples: run, eat, write, is, are, have
Sentence: The children play outside.

Adjective

An adjective describes or gives more information about a noun or pronoun.

Examples: big, red, clever, beautiful, three
Sentence: She has a beautiful dress.

Adverb

An adverb gives more information about a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Examples: quickly, slowly, very, yesterday, carefully
Sentence: The boy ran quickly.

Preposition

A preposition shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word.

Examples: in, on, under, beside, between, from
Sentence: The ball is under the table.

Conjunction

A conjunction joins words, phrases, or sentences.

Examples: and, but, or, because, so, although
Sentence: I wanted to play, but it was raining.

Interjection

An interjection is a word or short expression that shows a sudden feeling or emotion.

Examples: Wow!, Oh!, Hurray!, Alas!, Ouch!
Sentence: Wow! That is a beautiful painting.
